S.I. Taneyev Through the Eyes of a Landlord. Memoirs of N.P. Vishnyakov
Abstract. For the first time, unique archival material is being published — the memoirs of N.P. Vishnyakov (1844–1927) about S.I. Taneyev (1856–1915), a Russian composer, teacher, scholar, and an outstanding figure of Russian musical culture. The handwritten original was discovered in the Central State Archive of the City of Moscow, where The Autobiographical Notes of N.P. Vishnyakov, the landlord of a wing in Maly Vlasyevsky Lane where Taneyev spent the last years of his life, are preserved. In comparison with the well-known memoirs of Taneyev’s other contemporaries, the authors of the preface to Vishnyakov’s memoirs note the polemical character of certain passages. However, this does not diminish the strong impression that the memoirs leave on the reader. The publication aims to make this rare material accessible and to recreate a vivid portrait of Sergei Ivanovich through the descriptions of his contemporary.
