Renaissance and the Renaissances, or What the Spanish Renaissance Revived

Abstract. The article examines the little and insufficiently studied, or completely unknown features of the artistic culture and spiritual life of Spain during the Renaissance — the specifics of Spanish humanism, including in relation to the Italian Renaissance. The research is based on an extensive corpus of works by representatives of the Spanish Renaissance and the works of modern Spanish-speaking researchers.

The author highlights the important role of the culture of the sounding word in Spain which led to the accessibility of Renaissance ideas to the broad masses of the population. The article analyses the active appeal of cultural and artistic figures to the historical past of the country, starting from the time of the rule of the Goths. The Renaissance aspiration to the ideal was projected onto the past of its own people, and this apology for national traditions and their mythopoeic interpretation by playwrights, poets, and philosophers affirmed national identity and a sense of personal involvement into the historical process.

Keywords: metamorphoses of humanism, various Renaissances, the sounding word, the resurrection of the past, Spain
